Two men have been left critically injured this morning after a truck rear-ended another on the N1 highway, approximately 30 km outside of Bloemfontein.

ER24 paramedics, along with the provincial services, arrived on the scene and found the two trucks on the side of the road. The driver of the truck that rear-ended the other was found inside the vehicle while the passenger was seated nearby.

Paramedics found that the driver lay trapped inside the cab of the truck. Both men were found to be in a critical condition.

Rescue services had to use specialised rescue tools to free the man from the vehicle. Once freed, paramedics treated both men and provided with advanced life support intervention. Once treated, both patients were transported to Pelonomi Hospital for further treatment.

It is believed that the one truck sat stationary in the emergency lane of the road. The driver of the second truck apparently lost control of his vehicle, causing him to rear-end the first truck.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
