The South African Police Service remains steadfast in its mission to eradicate corruption and illegal mining activities as four suspects were apprehended during the disruptive Operation Vala Umgodi in Sekhukhune. A specialized team comprising members from Techtical Response Team , National Intervention Unit, Crime Intelligence coordinators, and South Africa National Defence Force,conducted targeted operations at various illegal mining sites, culminating in a significant raid at the Atok hotspot. The suspects were arrested for offenses, including illegal mining, immigration violations, possession of suspected stolen raw minerals, and bribery.The operation, which unfolded on 06 July 2024, uncovered stockpiles in Atok and Mooihoek.

During the operation, one of the arrested suspects attempted to bribe the team with a substantial sum of money in exchange for his release. In a display of unwavering professionalism, the police officers swiftly apprehended the suspect and seized the bribe, (cash money) as evidence.

The arrested suspects are currently detained at SAPS Apel and are set to appear before the Sekhukhune Magistrate Court.

In a separate operation, the multidisciplinary team arrested a twenty-four-year-old suspect for engaging in illegal gold mining and immigration violations in Ga-Seloane village under Lulekani policing area in Mopani District. The team successfully seized one horse and trailer truck containing chrome, suspected stolen raw minerals, and a pair of keys.

The suspect will appear in Local Magistrate Court in due course.

The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe underscores that the arrest of the individual attempting to corrupt the police officers sends a resounding message to potential suspects that there is no place for corruption within the SAPS ranks.
