Members of the SAPS from Border Policing have arrested a 43-year-old truck driver from the Kingdom of Eswatini after his alleged attempts to smuggle dagga into South Africa. An estimated street value of the 150 kg’s of dagga is at about R630, 840. The male suspect was apprehended at Oshoek Port of Entry in the early hours of Thursday, 21 March 2024 around 00:30 am.
According to information, the suspect, who was driving an articulate truck, was searched by members of the SAPS on the arrival side of the Port of Entry.
It was during this search when the astute members discovered the dagga concealed under the load of timber
As a result, the driver was then detained and charged accordingly.
The truck, with registration number plates from the Kingdom of Eswatini was confiscated together with the seized dagga, was confiscated for further investigation.
Meanwhile the suspect is expected to appear at the Elukwatini Magistrate’s Court today, Friday 22 March 2024.
This has brought some excitement to the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, who applauded members for the dedication displayed by members. “The continuous arrests and successes witnessed at the borders prove that indeed the members are working with diligence. They are doing an excellent work on daily basis,” said the General.
