The South African Police Service’s Integrated Operation on Counterfeit and Contraband Goods in Gauteng has struck again today, this time seizing more than R2,5 million worth of fake merchandise in Johannesburg.
The branded illicit /counterfeit clothing items were seized in the Johannesburg central business district, Mayfair and the Dubai Mall. Attempts by the dealers to hide the items in basements and vehicles came to nought as the police team, armed with a warrant and laser sharp intelligence, retrieved the items from those dark corners.
All sorts of branded items, including Springbok jerseys, were seized by this multi-disciplinary team that consisted of the Gauteng SAPS’s Illicit goods and counterfeit team, the Public Order Police, Commercial Crimes Investigation, Crime Intelligence, Crime Prevention Wardens, South African Revenue Service’s Customs Unit and Brand protectors.
“Dealers in illicit counterfeit clothing and items are in for a very tough time as we will be on their case until they learn to live with the fact that counterfeit is illegal and unacceptable and robbing the Country from large amounts of revenue.” said provincial commissioner of the police, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela.
