Members of the Groblersbrug Border Policing Unit in the Waterberg District arrested two foreign nationals and confiscated a consignment of illicit goods worth approximately R2.6 million on Wednesday, 02 July 2025 at approximately 16:30, after intercepting a truck attempting to smuggle drugs and other contraband through the Groblersbrug Port of Entry.
The suspects, a 45-year-old male truck driver and a 30-year-old female passenger, were traveling in a Scania truck with Mpumalanga registration plates, allegedly transporting a load of maize meal that had been cleared for outbound movement. During a routine inspection, officers noticed several black plastic bags concealed beneath the maize meal.
Further examination in the designated inspection bay revealed white plastic lunch boxes containing a crystal-like substance, suspected to be crystal meth, as well as bags of compressed dagga and multiple bottles of Benylin with codeine, a controlled substance often misused as a drug.
The estimated street value of the recovered illicit goods is R2.6 million, and the Scania truck, valued at approximately R850 000, was also seized.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the vigilance and commitment of the border policing members:
“We are tightening control measures at our ports of entry, and this arrest is yet another demonstration of our commitment to intercepting those who attempt to smuggle harmful substances into or out of our country. We will continue to deal decisively with transnational crime,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 04 July 2025, facing charges related to attempting to smuggle illicit goods and contravention of the Medicines and Related Substances Act.
