On 22 June 2026, Tshwane Metro Police Department Region 2 Sector 2 members received a tip-off regarding cable stripping and excavation activities at an Onderstepoort scrapyard in Pretoria North.Tshwane Metro Police Department Region 2 Sector 2 members, with support from the Cable Theft Unit, responded swiftly to the complaint. Upon arrival on the scene, they intercepted a South African female found in possession of suspected stolen copper cable.
During the investigation, the suspect alleged that she was employed by a pyramid subcontractor and was working with cables and copper earth rods.
Further consultation was conducted with the Energy and Electricity Business Unit to verify the suspect’s claims. It was confirmed that the cable belonged to the City of Tshwane. The suspect was subsequently arrested and detained at the nearest police station for tampering with municipal infrastructure and possession of suspected stolen copper cable.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court this week.
The Chief of Police, Commissioner YCR Faro, has welcomed the arrest and commended the team for their swift response and their hard work. She further stated that there is no place in the city for criminality, and anyone found committing such acts will face the full might of the law.
