Earlier this morning, just after 2am, Mi7 National Group’s Emergency Medical Services was dispatched after reports of a Motor Vehicle Accident on the N3 near Market Road.
Mi7 medics found that a large container had fallen off a truck. Two vehicles then collided into the container. The truck left the scene before authorities or medical teams could arrive.
The two vehicles had three occupants – one of whom had already succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased on scene.
Another was in a critical condition, but was still entrapped in the wreckage. Pietermaritzburg firefighters, using Specialised Hydraulic Rescue Equipment previously donated by Mi7 National Group, worked tirelessly to extricate the patient. It took two hours to get him free.
He was treated by another service provider and placed on a medical ventilator before being taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Mi7 medics tended to the third patient whom also required Advanced Life Support Interventions before being taken to hospital for further treatment.
Investigations are underway to find the truck driver who fled the scene.
We pass our condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and wish all those injured a successful recovery.
