Members of the Essential Infrastructure Task Team were on duty when they received a report from Cartrack regarding a hijacked truck on the N3 near Heidelberg Mall. The hijacking was carried out by a syndicate suspected to be part of the Blue Light Gang, known for impersonating police officers. Two armed suspects were involved.
The suspects hijacked the truck along with the driver, later offloading the trailers in Jeppe and continuing with the truck head toward the Johannesburg CBD.
Acting on coordinates provided by Cartrack, EITT members swiftly responded and successfully recovered the truck. A follow-up search for the trailers in Jeppe was conducted but yielded no results.
Background Info:
The truck originated from Port Shepstone, KZN, transporting a load of sweets.
The trailers and stock remain missing.
The recovered truck head was taken to Aeroton for safekeeping.
The truck owner was informed, and a case will be opened at Heidelberg SAPS.
The driver was later located and found safe. However, his personal belongings were stolen. Assistance was rendered by Johannesburg Central Wardens.
The truck was recovered without damage and is currently booked in at the Aeroton Vehicle Identification Section in good condition.
