A 33-year-old truck driver was trapped in the wreckage of his vehicle for more than 90 minutes following a collision involving two trucks on the N3 southbound carriageway near Hammarsdale this morning.

Shortly after 8am, Mi7’s Emergency Medical Services received reports of a serious collision just after the Hammarsdale offramp. Multiple Mi7 EMS units were dispatched, including an ambulance based at Hibiscus Hospital Cato Ridge as well as the Rapid Response EMS vehicle sponsored by BMW Pietermaritzburg, part of the Supertech Group.

On arrival, paramedics found the driver trapped inside the badly damaged truck. Mi7 medical personnel immediately began assessing and stabilising the patient while awaiting the arrival of the eThekwini Fire Department to assist with his extrication. Once firefighters arrived, the N3 southbound carriageway was closed to traffic to allow emergency personnel to conduct the rescue operation safely.

After an extensive extrication operation, the driver was successfully freed from the wreckage and transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital in a stable condition.
