The Vala Umgodi task teams in Limpopo have conducted a series of successful operations targeting illegal mining and mineral transportation activities in Mopani and Sekhukhune districts.
On 8 July 2025, at approximately 19:50, the Sekhukhune District Vala Umgodi task team conducted a successful operation along the R555 Steelpoort Road towards Spitskop. During the operation, a white tipper truck was intercepted at a junction near Tubatse Residence. The 45-year-old driver was arrested after being found transporting minerals believed to be chrome.
Later that evening, at about 22:40, the team carried out a further operation near Sefateng Chrome Mine. A side tipper truck was observed loaded what is presumed to be chrome. As the vehicle prepared to enter the main road, it was intercepted. The driver and passenger, aged 44 and 56, were interviewed and found to lack the proper permits. Both suspects were arrested for illegal transportation of minerals suspected to be chrome.
In Mopani, on 9 July 2025, at approximately 21:00, the Mopani District Vala Umgodi team responded to complaints of illegal sand mining in the Ritavi policing area. Upon arrival, police found a truck already inside the targeted area, mining sand without lights at night.
Three suspects were arrested for illegal sand mining. During the arrest, two of the suspects were found to be undocumented persons. The suspects were found in possession of two shovels, two steel picks, and a Toyota tipper truck, all linked to illegal mining activities.
