The Sekhukhune District Vala Umgodi Task Team conducted a focused operation along the R555 Steelpoort Road on 1 July 2025, aimed at curbing illegal activities within the area.
At approximately 15:10, the team intercepted a white side tipper truck at Podungwane. An inspection revealed that the vehicle was illegally transporting minerals, specifically chrome. A thorough search led to the arrest of the driver, aged 35, and the passenger, aged 37, on charges of illegal transportation of minerals.
Following this, the team proceeded to Spietskop Portion 06, suspecting illegal mining activities. Upon arrival, the illegal miners dispersed in various directions, and no arrests were made at that time. However, several pieces of abandoned mining equipment were recovered, including a jackhammer, generator, five shovels, a pickaxe, three spades, a wheelbarrow, and extension cord.
This operation forms part of the ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining and protect the province’s natural resources. The South African Police Service remains committed to enforcing legal compliance.
