A 32-year-old man that was run over by a truck was refused assistance for several hours by passing pedestrians after they recognised him as a convicted Armed Robber.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was called out to the centre medium of the R102 between Verulam & Canelands in Kwazulu Natal after receiving reports of a Hit & Run at approx 15:57 (Thursday).
Reaction Officers & a Paramedic located an injured man at 16:01 between the north and southbound lane. When interviewed he informed First Responders that he has been knocked down by a truck four (4) hours prior to their arrival. The truck driver then fled the scene. The injured man added that he was refused assistance by the community after they identified him as a convicted Armed Robber that was arrested seven (7) years ago when he was fingered as a getaway driver in a crime committed in the Riverview area. He was knocked down in the same area earlier today.
He was sentenced to fifteen (15) years in Westville Prison & was released on parole in 2022.
Pedestrians ignored the man since 12:00 today when he pleaded for assistance. He eventually was assisted by a person known to him who moved him to a location closer to the Central Business District and contacted the RUSA Operations Center for help.
The man sustained a broken leg and bodily injuries.
