Members of Bravo Company, Platoon 3 from 10 South African Infantry Battalion conducted patrols in the New Graveyard area near Ficksburg. During the operation, they discovered 58 cattle that had crossed illegally from Lesotho into South Africa to graze. When members approached, the herdsman fled back to Lesotho on horseback, taking a few cattle with him. The remaining livestock was secured on site.
While moving the cattle to a nearby holding area, members made a second discovery of 26 cattle and 66 sheep wandering unattended in a public space. The shepherd also fled the scene. The Director and Pound Master responded quickly, and when the owners later arrived, they failed to provide valid documents for the animals.
The Platoon Commander, Captain Mametja, joined the team on site to support and ensure smooth coordination. All livestock was safely impounded and escorted by the Military Police. The identified owner was instructed to report to the Ficksburg Municipality, where a fine was issued in line with municipal regulations. The total estimated value of the livestock is R 879 060,00.
This operation shows how members remain alert and committed to protecting the country’s borders. Their teamwork and quick response help prevent illegal grazing and ensure that the law is followed.
