An intelligence driven operation conducted by members of the Public Order Policing (POP) Unit and the Potchefstroom Flying Squad resulted in the arrest of two alleged undocumented migrants for allegedly being in possession of illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of more than R2 million on Monday morning, 27 July 2026, in Klerksdorp, North West.
According to preliminary information, police intercepted a two-ton truck, transporting illicit cigarettes on the N12, near Matlosana. The truck was stopped and searched, leading to the discovery of numerous master boxes of illicit cigarettes concealed inside. The driver and his crew member, both alleged foreign migrants, aged 39 and 41, were arrested at the scene. Police also confiscated the illicit cigarettes and the two-ton truck, allegedly used in the commission of the offence.
The Department of Home Affairs has been engaged to verify the suspects’ immigration status.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 29 July 2026, where they will face charges relating to the possession of illicit cigarettes.
