The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) is set to host an awareness campaign at the Taung Level Crossing on Tuesday, 28 October 2024, starting at 08h30. This initiative aims to enhance safety at one of the region’s identified hotspots for level crossing injuries and fatalities, as highlighted in the 2023/24 Safety Intervention Report.
The Taung Level Crossing serves as a vital access point for vehicles entering the town from neighbouring villages, experiencing a high volume of traffic. Recent reports from the Greater Taung Local Municipality indicate a serious incident involving a train and a private vehicle at this crossing nearly six months ago. The fluctuating frequency of trains along this line, primarily transporting seasonal agricultural products, underscores the need for increased safety measures.
Under the leadership of the RSR Board Chairperson, this campaign will involve key rail stakeholders in educating motorists and pedestrians about safe railway behaviour. The goal is to foster a strong safety culture within the Taung community while establishing collaborations with local stakeholder groups, including the taxi association.
Members of the media are invited to join the Honorable Mayor Cllr. Tumisang Gaoraelwe, the RSR Board Chairperson, and the Local Chief at the Taung Level Crossing for this important event.
