Police in Tonga recovered dagga with an estimated street value of several million rand following a high-speed chase in Sibange near Tonga on Friday, 13 June 2025, at approximately 18:20.
Members from the Ehlanzeni District (Tonga Task Team) were conducting a stop and search operation in the Sibange area when they attempted to pull over a grey VW Polo. The driver failed to stop and sped off, prompting a chase that continued for around 10 kilometres.
The suspect eventually abandoned the vehicle in the Khombaso area and fled into nearby bushes. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered 24 compressed bags of dagga, believed to be worth millions of rand. A temporary driver’s licence was also found in the vehicle, suggesting the suspect is from Limpopo Province.
The vehicle and the dagga were seized by police. The suspect is still at large.
Anyone with information that could assist in locating the suspect is urged to contact the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or to submit tip offs via the MYSAPS App. All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has welcomed the seizure and issued a stern warning to the suspect. “The suspect may run, but he cannot hide. Police will track him down and bring him to justice,” he said.
