Police in the OR Tambo District are investigating a business hijacking following the recovery of a hijacked lorry truck and a large quantity of stolen goods on the R61 between Libode and Port St Johns.
It is alleged that at approximately 10:15 on Wednesday, 29 July 2026, a Toyota Hino lorry truck transporting frozen food from Mthatha to Port St Johns was hijacked at gunpoint by four unidentified suspects travelling in a Suzuki sedan. The suspects allegedly wore masks that partially concealed their faces.
Members attached to the Mthatha K9 Unit and Flying Squad responded swiftly after the incident was reported and located the hijacked lorry truck on a gravel road. The driver and his assistant were found unharmed. Police established that some of the cargo had already been offloaded into a white Isuzu bakkie before the suspects fled the scene.
A search for the suspects led to the recovery of the abandoned Isuzu bakkie along the R61. The vehicle was still loaded with frozen food believed to have been stolen from the truck. Preliminary investigations revealed that the bakkie is registered to a butchery in Mthatha, and an investigation is underway.
The OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, urged investigators to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those responsible are brought to book. Police are following up on all available leads, and the investigation is at an advanced stage. No arrests have been made at this stage.
