The police in Mecklenburg have taken a firm stance against illegal mining activities through the disposal of equipment seized during Operation Vala Umgodi in Mecklenburg. Over a period of three days, from 15 to 17 July 2025, the police destroyed a total of 289 jackhammers, 216 generators, and six water pumps, items that had been abandoned or confiscated from suspects involved in illegal mining operations.

This operation was conducted at a local scrap metal yard in the Steelpoort area, where the equipment was responsibly and securely destroyed to prevent it from being used unlawfully again. This initiative reflects the police’s unwavering commitment to cracking down on illegal mining, which poses significant risks to safety, the environment, and economic development.

This is part of a broader strategy to eliminate illegal mining tools from the system and to send a clear message that illegal activities will not be tolerated. We call on community members to continue cooperating with law enforcement and to report any suspicious activities that could threaten our safety and resources.

We remain dedicated to protecting our communities and ensuring that justice is served against those who seek to undermine our laws and development.
