On Friday, 08 August 2025, the Sekhukhune District Vala Umgodi Task Team conducted a disruptive operation in the Sekhukhune area, focusing on chrome mining-related offences and illegal activities associated with mining. The operation comprised high-visibility patrols and targeted stop-and-search activities at identified hotspots.

At about 02:20 in the Tweefontein mining area (Red Chrome mining area adjacent to Klarnet mine), a green side-tip truck with brown trailers loaded with minerals presumed to be chrome was intercepted. The driver failed to produce a permit authorising loading and transportation of chrome. The 57-year-old driver was arrested and charged with illegal transportation of chrome.

At about 08:40 at Mabowe Park, Ga-Mathabatha, three adult males (ages 36, 39 and 46) were spotted engaging in illegal mining activities. The suspects were cornered, arrested, and mining equipment was confiscated.

At about 15:30 in Tukakgomo village, the same team arrested two adult males for contravention of the Immigration Act. One was found to have a passport indicating an overstayed status; the other was found without a passport.

The Vala Umgodi Task Team will continue with high-visibility patrols and disruptive operations in the Sekhukhune area to deter illegal mining, illegal transportation of minerals, and related offences. Investigations are ongoing.

The SAPS remains committed to safeguarding communities and protecting natural resources by disrupting illegal mining networks and enforcing compliance with licensing and immigration regulations. We urge communities to report suspicious mining activity and to cooperate with authorities to ensure swift and lawful action. #IllegalMining
