On 3 July 2025, at approximately 01:20, the Sekhukhune District Vala Umgodi task team received a credible tip-off regarding a truck suspected of illegally loading and transporting chrome at Diphale village. Acting swiftly on this information, the team responded promptly to the area and successfully located a side tipper truck departing from the alleged site.
The truck was intercepted and searched, revealing that it was loaded with minerals suspected to be chrome. The driver, a 34-year-old male, was immediately interviewed. He was unable to produce any valid permits or proof of authorized transport for the minerals in question.
As a result, the driver was arrested for the illegal transportation of minerals, and the truck was confiscated along the roadside opposite Marula Platinum Mine, near Diphale village.
This operation underscores the commitment of the Vala Umgodi task team to combat illegal mining activities and to protect South Africa’s mineral resources. The arrested individual and confiscated truck will be processed accordingly.
The South African Police Service wishes to remind the public that illegal mining and transportation of minerals are serious offenses that undermine our economy and environment. The police will continue to monitor and act against illegal activities to ensure the safety and integrity of our natural resources.
