As part of commemorating the October Transport Month (OTM), the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) conducted a multi-disciplinary Rest Stop on R23 Road in Standerton on Friday, 25 October 2024. The event was supported by the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPWRT), Lekwa local Municipality, South African Police Service (SAPS), and other stakeholders.

The purpose of the rest stop was to encourage motorists who travel long distances on the route to take regular breaks in order to avoid road crashes caused by fatigue. Motorists and passengers were also educated on road safety, with the participants distributing information leaflets to drivers and passengers.

R23 is known for high traffic volumes, particularly on weekends of month ends and peak holiday seasons. It is also one of the priority routes as it connects Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. Apart from minibus taxis and other vehicles, many trucking companies use the road to transport coal to Amajuba Power Station.

Rest Stops have also been conducted in Nkangala and Ehlanzeni districts.
