The Bethlehem police, together with Crime Intelligence, discovered cases of illicit cigarettes that were kept in storage in the Morelig suburbs of Bethlehem.

The discovery followed after the police stopped and searched the bakkie that was transporting the cigarettes believed to be loaded from the storage units. The storage unit was opened, and more than 220 cases of cigarettes were found and confiscated.

Ladybrand SARS Customs was activated and seized the cases estimated at R4.5 million. The cargo will be further investigated by customs while the owner is being kept in custody. A few cartons of similar cigarettes were also seized from the shop owner.

A case of possession of illicit cigarettes is being investigated.
