The Oudtshoorn Municipality’s Environmental Unit, led by Mr Ambrose Carelse and his team, in partnership with the Garden Route District Municipality Air Quality Management Mr Angus Andries, successfully conducted a heavy-vehicle emission testing and air-quality awareness programme on 27th November 2025. The initiative focused on all heavy-duty vehicles entering the municipal area and forms part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public health, reduce air pollution, and highlight the broader impacts of emissions on climate change.

Supported by the Municipality’s Law Enforcement and Traffic division, the campaign aimed not only to monitor emissions but also to educate drivers, fleet managers, and the public on the importance of clean air and responsible environmental practices. The collaborative effort ensured smooth operations throughout the programme. All 18 vehicles assessed successfully passed the visual emissions test. No dark exhaust fumes were detected from any of the heavy vehicles inspected, an encouraging result that reflects good vehicle maintenance, responsible operator behaviour, and a positive step towards reducing local air pollution. This outcome also demonstrates the growing awareness and commitment of transport operators to environmental protection and compliance.

The Director championed the programme: Planning & Development, Ms Sinaye Jonas, who emphasised the Municipality’s commitment to continuous environmental monitoring.

“Maintaining consistent air-quality monitoring is not just a regulatory requirement – it is essential for protecting the well-being of our communities and preserving the environment for future generations. By closely tracking emissions and raising awareness, we are ensuring that Oudtshoorn remains a healthy and sustainable place to live,” said Ms Jonas.

The Oudtshoorn Municipality extends its sincere appreciation to the Garden Route District Municipality for their valuable support in ensuring the success of this initiative. Vehicle emission testing remains an ongoing activity in accordance with the Oudtshoorn Municipality’s Air Quality Management Plan.

The Environmental Unit will continue implementing similar awareness and monitoring programmes to uphold environmental standards and contribute to the ongoing fight against climate change.
