Yesterday at approximately 13:30, Rapid Emergency Medical Services (REMS) received multiple calls reporting a heavy motor vehicle that had overturned on the Oyster Bay gravel road.
REMS Paramedics, together with Metro EMS and other Private Ambulance Services, responded swiftly to the scene.
On arrival, Paramedics found a truck carrying animal feed that had overturned, with the driver’s cab severely crushed, trapping two patients.
Humansdorp Fire and Rescue along with Humansdorp Metro Rescue initiated a complex extrication using the “Jaws of Life.” A local towing company assisted by deploying a heavy-duty winch, allowing rescuers to lift the massive load and free the trapped patient.
Sadly, one patient sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on scene by Paramedics.
Two other patients, including the one extricated, were stabilized and transported to the nearest hospital for further treatment.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this tragic incident.
