An addition to the Fleet Safety Awards in 2024 was the introduction of cash prizes for the betterment of others’ lives. Winners nominate organisations or initiatives within their communities to receive the funds for development or upliftment projects. It was a proud moment to not only have an impact on the lives of individuals but to also improve the community.
One of the categories to receive a charitable prize was Best Organisation. The CEO of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, says: “The overall winner of this category was Bakers Tankers (Pty) Ltd. As such they won R20 000 to donate to an organisation in need within their community.
“The addition of this cash prize is a crucial opportunity to not only reward an organisation but also foster social improvement. If the communities in which we operate do not thrive, we cannot expect our businesses to thrive. It is the beginning of a journey toward ongoing community improvement that we look forward to continuing in 2025,” says Herbert.
The Director of Bakers Tankers, MG Tayoob, says the cash prize was donated to the Al-Tawheed Foundation. “The Foundation shows outstanding commitment to uplifting disadvantaged communities through education, social welfare, and community development programs. Examples include establishing educational institutions and feeding schemes. Operating under the motto ‘Educate, Enrich, Empower,’ they have a legacy of impactful change over three decades.
“Baker’s Tankers resonates deeply with Al-Tawheed Foundation, through our own feeding scheme for children and local communities. We aim to assist the Foundation in creating a self-reliant and empowered society. Part of our CSR vision is to engage, inspire and promote health and well-being,” says Tayoob.
The Director of Al-Tawheed, Basheer Patel says a donation like this will significantly contribute to the betterment of society in several ways:
- Support feeding schemes helping alleviate hunger and malnutrition.
- Improve resources in classroom equipment, technical training tools, or scholarships, empowering one to achieve economic self-sufficiency.
- Assist families providing access to necessities and stability and dignity to disadvantaged households.
- Expand access to critical health services, such as vision care and general medical support.
- Foster skill development, create job opportunities and promote long-term societal progress.
- Continuing Al-Tawheed Foundation’s legacy while aligning with our own commitment to support sustainable community development.
Fleet operators have a unique responsibility to give back to the communities as one’s success is deeply intertwined with their well-being. Tayoob says: “Many communities face multiple challenges, and fleet organisations can play a crucial role in addressing these issues through CSR initiatives.
“Giving back not only helps offset operational footprints but also creates a positive legacy, enhances reputations, and aligns with ethical business practices, ensuring both societal and business sustainability.”
