The police would like to caution the public against hitch-hiking or giving lifts to hitch-hikers as this may result in crimes such as robberies or putting the lives of those engaged in the practice at risk.

This warning stems from an increase in robberies reported in the Recently Kinross Policing Precinct. Though no final conclusions could be drawn up as yet, because the investigations are still ongoing however, the Police cannot rule out the possibility that some of these robberies could be influenced by hitch-hiking as reported incidents occurred near hitch-hiking spots.

Some motorists were hijacked of their vehicles in the identified hiking spots which prompted the Police to issue this warning.

The Police continue to warn citizens to be extra cautious so that unfortunate incidents like rapes or murder could be prevented but it seems as if some are not adhering to the advice but they carry on hitchhiking and giving lifts to strangers. It is shocking to learn that some people think that it may not happen to them but this behaviour often put their lives at risk.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has urged members of the public to stay away from hitch-hiking or offering lifts to people that they do not know.
