A man, believed to be in his 60s, was left critically injured this afternoon when his light motor vehicle rear-ended a cement truck on the R546 in Secunda, Mpumalanga.

At approximately 13h30, ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found both the light motor vehicle and truck in the veld. Parts of the veld were well alight, spreading thick smoke across the scene.

Upon closer inspection, paramedics found the driver lying trapped inside his light motor vehicle. Rescue services had to use specialized rescue equipment to free the man from his smoldering vehicle.

Once the man had been extricated, paramedics found that the man had sustained several wounds and fractures and was in a critical condition. Treatment and advanced life support was immediately initiated in an effort to stabilize the patient’s vital signs. The patient was thereafter transported, under advanced life support supervision, to Mediclinic Highveld for urgent treatment.

It is understood that the heavy smoke from the nearby veld fire was a contributing factor to the cause of the collision.

Local authorities will be investigating further.
