Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House: A few hours ago, our team from Road Traffic Inspectorate in the Durban Region attended a major accident involving three trucks, a minibus taxi and SUV.

The accident took place just 200 meters before Marrianhill Toll Plaza.

Fortunately there was no loss of life.

A total of twelve people sustained injuries. These include eleven occupants of a minibus taxi including the driver.

The truck driver who caused an accident sustained minor injures.

According to the RTI preliminary report, the truck driver experienced a brake failure as he drove past the fountain next to the Free way.

However, he couldn’t make use of the arrestor bed due to activities around the area.

Approximately 200 meters before the toll, he swerved to the left and to the embarkment.

The truck climbed the bank and rolled over into an SUV parked on the yellow/ emergency lane.

The truck smashed into a minibus taxi which had just passed the stationery SUV.

This truck further hit another truck – with the third truck affected by an impact.

Only an emergency lane has been reopened. The slow lane is still closed.

Importantly, today we are attending the last sitting of the year in the Provincial Legislature.

We will be informing honorable members briefly about our plans for the festive season

The appointment of 197 newly trained and registered Traffic Law Enforcement has significantly strengthened our law enforcement capacity.

It has substantially enhanced daily law enforcement operations between Pietermaritzburg and Durban where there is construction

We are now ensuring a quicker response to any incidents / accidents with the support from Durban Metro Police, Umsunduzi Traffic Department and South African Police Services.

Upgrades within the vicinity of Key-Ridge, Hammarsdale and Pietermaritzburg interchanges have been undertaken to remove hazardous merge areas.

We are working in conjunction with the South African National Roads Agency [SANRAL].

This has enabled us to ensure better traffic management during road construction.

We are also strengthening controlled speed zones and improving road signage within construction areas.

With this we are aiming at reducing the number of accidents.

In particular, with the change of the road infrastructure, primarily between Ashburton to the N3 / N2 Interchange, this has assisted in aligning dangerous curves, rebuilding interchanges and resurfacing the road infrastructure to reduce road accidents between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.
