On Friday, 25 July, Rapid Emergency Medical Services (REMS) responded to reports of a serious accident involving a heavy motor vehicle.

Upon arrival, REMS Paramedics found a truck had gone down an embankment, with one patient ejected and critically injured. The patient suffered severe head injuries and abdominal trauma, with suspected internal bleeding.

Our Advanced Life Support (ALS) practitioner acted swiftly, administering a crucial, advanced medication carried only by Emergency Care Practitioners (ECPs) – designed to help control internal bleeding, especially vital with extended travel times due to poor weather conditions.

In addition, due to the cold temperatures and heavy rain, the patient’s IV fluids were delivered through a fluid warmer – specialized equipment exclusive to REMS. This step is critical in reversing hypothermia and avoiding the Lethal Triad of trauma: hypothermia, acidosis, and coagulopathy (causes unstoppable bleeding)

The patient was stabilized and transported to an upgraded facility for further treatment, under the continuous care of our ALS team.

Sadly, one patient sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones during this difficult time.

This incident highlights why choosing REMS matters when life depends on it. Advanced care. Critical interventions. Equipment and expertise that make a difference.
