Xhariep District, Free State – A devastating collision occurred on the N1, approximately 7km from Edenburg to Trompsburg, on January 7, 2025.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of a light motor vehicle (LMV) lost control and collided with a heavy motor vehicle (HMV) before crashing into another LMV. The HMV was traveling from Gauteng to Cape Town, while the LMVs were traveling from Cape Town to Welkom and Lady Grey to Germiston, respectively.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded quickly to the scene and triaged the patients. Seven patients were transported to Albert Nzula Hospital for stabilization, while two patients signed refusal forms for hospital transportation for further treatment.
The collision resulted in significant road obstruction, and the road was closed temporarily. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes, including the bridge off-ramp.
