Seven construction workers have been left injured after a truck crashed on the N3 near Armitage Road, Pietermaritzburg, this morning.

Just before 10am, Mi7 National Group’s Emergency Medical Services was dispatched after reports of a collision on the South-bound carriageway near the mall.

Mi7 medical teams arrived to find carnage.

It is believed the driver of a truck lost control and smashed into the construction zone, slamming into two construction vehicles – a truck and a bakkie.

Seven construction workers were injured – two critically and five moderately. Mi7 teams administered Advanced Life Support interventions and transported two of the construction workers to hospital. The rest were stabilised and taken to various hospitals by other service providers.

The truck driver and his passenger were also injured. The driver was left entrapped in the wreckage, which had rolled. He was found inverted in the cabin. It took medics and Pietermaritzburg firefighters almost 40 minutes to free him.

Mi7 teams also transported the occupants of the truck to hospital.

Motorists are urged to avoid the N3 in both directions as recovery operations are currently underway. Traffic is currently gridlocked.

We wish all those injured a successful recovery.
