Significant progress has been made in dismantling a copper-theft syndicate targeting state infrastructure in Durban.

On Monday afternoon, three suspects were apprehended in Pinetown while transporting over four tons of stolen copper in a truck. The estimated value of the recovered metal is approximately R800,000.

One of the suspects was found in possession of a pistol loaded with 18 rounds of ammunition.

The successful operation was carried out through a joint effort by the DPCI Port Shepstone, SAPS Economic Infrastructure Task Team, Durban Flying Squad, and the Metro Police Drug Team, with support from PRASA, Telkom, and the eThekwini Municipality.

The suspects are facing multiple charges related to infrastructure damage and are expected to appear in court soon.
