Inkonkoni T-junction, N2: In line with Women’s Month celebrations, today I was part of a successful Female-Led Roadblock targeting cars from Swaziland, Mozambique, Mpumalanga Province and other neighbouring countries.
By and large, today’s roadblock marked the beginning of an intensified integrated operation involving different law enforcement officers as part of the fight against cross-border crime.
More than 127 cars were searched and we discovered the following:-
1. Counterfeit alcohol from Mozambique;
2. About 18 illegal immigrants who were detained;
3. Motorists were fined for driving without driver’s license and for failing to display license disc.
Critically, we are determined to ensure that our road networks are not used to facilitate illegal movement of people and goods.
Counterfeit and undeclared goods are destroying our economy.
The South African Revenue Services is losing billions of revenue due to highly-taxed goods such as cigarettes, alcohol, petroleum and others which are not to declared through customs and excise.
Today’s operation involved the following:-
1. KZN Department of Transport Road Traffic Inspectorate;
2. Cross-Border Road Transport Agency (C-BRTA);
3. SAPS;
4. South African National Defense Force;
5. Umkhanyakude District Municipality;
6. Home Affairs Immigration Unit,
7. South African Revenue Services – Customs and Excise;
8. South African National Taxi Council.
